When it comes to making a decision about what time of year to build your cabin, barndominium or house; there are several things that need to be taken into consideration. Firstly, is the availability of labor. Second is the cost of materials. And thirdly, is when you plan to make use of the building. With these three things in consideration, let me tell you why building in the winter months are a great time to build.
I have heard it this so many times, especially on projects where the homeowner is the manager of the project. Everything was going along well, and then one of the contractors was unable to come. In the sequence of events, it threw off the planning for the rest of the project. The siding guys can't come until the framing is done. The insulation guys can't come until the wiring is done. And so on and so forth. Building is a series of processes that generally have to take place in a certain order. Summer and fall is when a lot of contractors are hard to find. This makes winter an optimal time to do your project to avoid the hiccups that come at other seasons.
Two of the greatest factors in the price of materials are demand and scarcity. It's been our experience that summer demand of lumber is high. Favorable weather in other parts of the nation drives up building material costs. If it so happens that you live in the South or in an area that is going to have good winter weather, you can save some serious money by choosing to purchase your materials in the winter months.
Finally, it's no secret that the real estate season gets most active during the spring and summer months. It's a choice time of year for homeowners to relocate. If you build in the winter and are planning to sell your existing home, then you will be right on schedule to catch the the market in full swing. Less time on the market will mean more savings for you.
And if you're going to build a barndominum or cabin; or if you want a natural look to a traditional home, then we suggest that you consider using tongue and groove products. You may want to try shiplap or some rustic trim. Cedar V-Groove is another good option. Check out www.customcutmillwork.shop for all your wood paneling and trim needs this winter. We'd be happy to build with you!
